The Studio for Movement Arts & Therapies (SMArT) brings together established artistes from a diversity of performing arts fields to share & create new experiences in movement. Led by dancer/choreographer & dance therapist Brinda Jacob-Janvrin, the studio aims to create an original & innovative dance vocabulary, forging Indian & Western aesthetics, sensibilities & techniques in a new & expressive voice for contemporary dance theatre. SMArT also strives to raise awareness of the various forms of art therapies amongst the general public by organizing workshops & training programs in dance/movement therapy, drama therapy, drawings & visual art therapy, music therapy, play therapy, Feldenkrais etc. Other than workshops & classes, SMART also offers counselling & art therapeutic services to both individuals & groups. Founder Brinda Jacob-Janvrin is contemporary dancer/choreographer with more than 20 years of performing experience. Brinda is also a qualified counsellor & has been working extensively with movement therapy over the last 10 years. She is currently a member of the IEATA (International Expressive Art Therapy Association), AMC (Authentic Movement Community) & CMTAI (Creative Movement Therapy Association of India). Today Brinda performs, choreographs, trains, practises dance therapy with individual clients as well as groups, facilitates dance pedagogy sessions, & designs creative dance syllabi for schools & educational institutions. The Studio for Movement Arts & Therapies (SMArT) was created in August 2008 with the intention of bringing together all these activities which Brinda believes are so interrelated & are constantly informing her approach to therapy, training & dancing. Brinda is also the Founder & Managing Trustee for the Studio for Movement Arts & Therapies Trust. Trust The Studio for Movement Arts & Therapies Trust was created to meet the increasing demands from the NGO & educational sector for high quality programs using the various art therapies for the greater empowerment of the individual. It is a registered charitable Trust, created in January 2011 with the following vision. “To offer creatively alive spaces & practices to nurture & catalyse self inquiry, expression & integration for individuals & communities”. One of the main projects of the Trust, the FECAT – Foundation Course in Expressive & Creative Arts, was conceptualised by Brinda Jacob-Janvrin & aims to train participants to use different art media in therapeutic relationships with children, adolescents & adults in different settings. Trustees Brinda Jacob-Janvrin is an experienced contemporary dancer/choreographer, an expressive & creative arts therapist & a qualified counsellor. The firm belief that body, mind & soul are interconnected led her to explore dance as a medium of authentic expression & as a tool to overcome limitations. Brinda heads the Studio for Movement Arts & Therapies & has conceptualised & designed the FECAT (Foundation course in Expressive & Creative Arts Therapies) the only program of its kind in India. Priyanka Pai is a Contemporary dancer, Creative Arts’ Therapist & a Pilate instructor. She is a co-founder of the trust along with Brinda. Her interests are mainly in using movement therapy with special needs children. She believes in reaching this to the various groups of society & bringing awareness about this in schools & other organisations. Swathi Shetty is a Geneticist by profession & works at the Centre for Human Genetics. She trained in Kathak & was part of a contemporary dance group for a few years. Her interests extend through science, writing, design & dance. Anitha Santhanam is a seasoned performer, director & a qualified workshop leader & teacher of physical theatre, with over a decade of professional practice. Her intensive movement training in India includes Bharatanatyam, yoga & choreography. Through embodiment, breath, voice & integral theatre practice, her workshops explore conflict, creativity & play, & accessing the inner energetic core of the body & self. Vinita Nag has worked in the non profit sector in India since 1997. Her experience with field realities & action research on social issues lends itself to an interest in spaces that facilitate & nurture critical reflection & an understanding of the impact of individual actions on the larger community. Collaborators Our friends & collaborators are our pillars of strength & have been instrumental in shaping the way the organisation & the programs develop. They have been generous with their support & inspirational in their work.
