East Cultural Association, popularly known as ECA, is a registered society established in 1974 by a few Malayalee Cultural enthusiasts settled in Bangalore East to promote arts, culture and fellowship among its members . It attracted likeminded cultural and sports persons into its fold over the years. Initially the main activity centered around occasional screening of popular Malayalam movies, and the enactment of dramas every year. The fellowship on these occasions were remarkably cordial, and it got strengthened with time. Celebration of Onam, the indomitable heritage festival of Malayalees, was added to the yearly events. The allotment of a BDA civic amenity site at 100 ft road in HAL Ii stage, Indiranagar in 1978 was a major milestone in the history of the association.. The members with a firm resolve launched a three phase building project. The first phase, a Community Hall, was completed within a year. Next turning point in the history was the decision of the members to start a Social Club for creating a permanent base for better fellowship and to provide recreational facilities to its members. Skeletal services were started in 1983, and a full fledged Club was inaugurated in 1986. With the steady increase in membership various activities and programs have been introduced from time to time to cater to the needs of the members and their families. A lot of focus and importance is given and resources allotted for display of talents of members, development of hidden talents and personality in children to mould future citizens for the country. Children’s Day, Kannada Rajyotsava , Members Nite, Ladies Nite, Nostalgia Nite, etc are some of the programs where members enthusiastically involve themselves. State / National ranking Billiards tournament, an inter-club shuttle Badminton competition, Rummy tournament, Bumper Housie etc. are important events every year. The two day Onam clelebration in which more than 250 members, children and adults, participate, coupled with several professional cultural programs, is indeed a cultural extravaganza, depicting the ‘ Unity in diversity’ of the country. The traditional Onam Sadya prepared and served by professionals from Kerala makes the celebration a unique manifestation of Onam in all its glory. The Shuttle courts, Billiards tables, Table Tennis, well equipped Gym, well stocked Bar , restaurant serving diverse delicacies , Banquet halls of different capacities, Guest rooms etc are the infrastructural facilities proudly owned by the association gradually built up over nearly four decades from its humble beginning. ECA, at present with a membership of more than 1600 families and affiliations with more than 50 clubs across India and abroad, undoubtedly holds a unique position in the social and sports segment in the Garden city.
